Laurel football falls to 2-6 heading into final home game

The Spartans had a strong defensive first quarter, but couldn't keep pace with Wise, falling, 47-0, to drop to 2-6 on the season.

Demont Cook had two sacks while Ethan Patrick recovered a fumble in the first quarter to help the Spartans hold Wise scoreless in the first quarter. But the Pumas scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead to halftime. Wise added another 19 points in the third quarter to extend its lead to 40-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

Laurel struggled to find a consistent offense, though Jarvis McClam finished with 101 yards through the air with just one interception. The Spartans finished with 11 first downs, but were unable to convert any of their gains into points.

Joel Roberson again led all receivers with five receptions for 47 yards, while Malik Harvin and Patrick added two receptions each for 14 and 28 yards, respectively. Harvin added six yards on the ground, but five other Spartans combined for 11 yards on 24 carries.

Laurel will hold its final home game of the season during its homecoming festivities Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. against DuVal.

Pallotti football

The Panthers fell behind early to St. Paul's, costing themselves repeatedly with costly turnovers on their way to a 54-8 loss to fall to 2-6 on the season.

Pallotti Prep committed five turnovers and gave up 47 points in the first half to allow St. Paul's to jump out to an insurmountable lead.

While the offense struggled to hold on to the ball, the Panthers' defense also struggled, giving up more than 150 rushing yards on just 11 carries to junior Dale Harris.

The Panthers travel to Baltimore to take on Boys Latin for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff Oct. 28.

Pallotti volleyball

The Lady Panthers lost a back-and-forth match with Notre Dame Prep in the fifth set 3-2 to fall in the opening round of the IAAM playoffs.

Notre Dame Prep took the first and third sets, 25-14 and 25-15, respectively, but Pallotti Prep took the second and fourth sets, 25-21 and 25-22, to force a decisive fifth set.

Notre Dame Prep raced out 14-10 in the fifth set, but the Lady Panthers took three straight points to trim Notre Dame Prep's lead to one point. On the next serve, Pallotti Prep's Victoria Johnson crushed a ball down the sideline that was ruled in by both line judges, but was overturned by the first official to end the set, 15-13, for Notre Dame Prep.

The Lady Panthers regular season and IAAM playoff are over, but they are scheduled to play in the Maryland/DC Private School Tournament Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.

Roundup: Pallotti Prep field hockey fell to Annapolis Area Christian School 2-0 to end its regular season 1-10-1. The Lady Panthers will open the IAAM field hockey tournament Nov. 1 at St. Timothy's in Stevenson. … Pallotti Prep boys soccer won a pair of games over Glenelg Country and St. Mary's to go 6-6-1 heading into its regular season finale against Park.
