Up to $10,000 in reward money is being offered for information leading to the arrests of the men who shot and killed Gregory Robert Sears on Jan. 6 in Russett.
A cash reward of $2,000 is being offered for a tip leading to an arrest and indictment, and Sears' family has offered another $8,000 for the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.
"We want to bring closure to the case," said Justin Mulcahy, spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department. "We're seeking the public's assistance. Sometimes the smallest piece of information can bring progress to an investigation. That's really what we're hoping for."
Police were called at about 2:23 a.m. Jan. 6 to the 8000 block of Ians Alley where Sears, 36, told officers he had been shot after two masked men had approached him in his driveway, police said.
The men fled on foot. Officers searched the area but did not find them. Sears was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he later died, police said.
Police believe the shooting began as a robbery, but they do not yet know whether it was random or if Sears was targeted, Mulcahy said.
Sears, who worked as a Medicaid advocate, left behind his wife; their first child, a son, was born about a week after his death.
"They didn't want to know what the sex was of the baby," said Daniel Sears, Gregory's younger brother. "It was going to be a surprise for both of them once the child was born."
Daniel Sears recalled his older brother as a giving man who was friends with everyone and always sought to bring his family together.
"He was such a great person, and for something that tragic to happen so needlessly to him is just ridiculous," Daniel Sears said. The family is offering the additional reward money and handing out fliers in the area to try to help close the case.
"We will keep doing what we can do until these people are caught," he said. "We don't want another family to have the hell we're going through right now."
