A student at Laurel High was arrested and charged with false reporting and telephone misuse after she reported that another student threatened her with a gun Thursday morning, according to Laurel Police spokesman James Collins.
Collins said Laurel High administrators put the school on lockdown after the report was made at the start of the school day, around 8 a.m., which means no one could leave or enter the school and students were confined to their classrooms.
Laurel Police spoke with the student and were not able to locate the other student who may have had a gun. Collins said the police searched each locker but found no gun, and concluded that the report was fraudulent.
"If there had actually been someone with a gun, the school would have been evacuated," Collins said.
"Students need to take these reports seriously," Collins said, noting that the police spent considerable time investigating the report.
Laurel Police would not release the student's name because she is a juvenile.
