Are you looking for a way to beat the summer heat? If so, stop by the Maryland City at Russett Library and join the 2011 Summer Reading Club. This year's theme, One World, Many Stories, encourages everyone to explore the world of books and travel the world through reading.
Kids entering 12th grade and younger are invited to sign up and help their school compete for the Chesapeake Cup.
The library offers several activities throughout the summer as part of the program. Also, teens who "like" the Anne Arundel County Public Library Teen Facebook page by midnight Saturday, July 2 will be eligible to win an iPod Touch. What a way to spend the summer.
Grab a book and go to your favorite spot at the pool, on the beach or in the cool air conditioning at home and enjoy the adventures!
The fun continues at the West Arundel Swim Club. Many may have heard the excitement at last Saturday's swim meet as numerous team records were broken during the first week of competition. The mighty Aqua-Ducks swam a great meet, with many new swimmers experiencing their first meet.
The team plays host again on Saturday, June 25, to the Cheverly Dolphins, with the meet beginning at 8:30 a.m. Come out to see some great races and cheer on our mighty Aqua-Ducks.
Other upcoming events at the pool include a Youth Nacho Night on Friday, June 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. for members and their guests. Cost to attend is $5 per person and $7 per guest.
Saturday night, June 25, 6 to 10:30 p.m., the adults will rule-the-pool for the Adult Night BBQ featuring pulled pork and pulled chicken from Red, Hot and Blue; and all the fixings. Cost to attend is $10 per person, and tickets will be sold in advance only at the pool. Leave the kids at home, and join the fun.
Close out your weekend, Sunday, June 26 from 6 to 9:30 p.m., with the club's annual Spaghetti Dinner. Enjoy salad, spaghetti, garlic bread and dessert for only $6 per person. You do not have to be a member to attend — all neighbors are invited.
The following weekend, West Arundel Swim Club hosts a cook-out potluck on July 1 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Cost to attend is $3 per member and $6 per guest. Each family provides a side dish or dessert to share, while the swim club provides the hamburgers and hot dogs.
And don't forget the spectacular Fourth of July party occurring at the pool from noon to 9 p.m. Join in the fun by participating in the volleyball tournament, horseshoe tournament, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, diving contest, belly flop contest, and many other fun activities for the family and kids.
Finally, the Maryland City neighborhood welcomes the new pastor of Community United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michelle R. Thorne begins her ministry at the church Sunday, July 3 at 10 a.m., followed by a reception for her after the service. Continue joining the church members every Sunday at 10 a.m. and "end your search for a friendly church." Thorne can be contacted after July 3 at 301-725-4918. Welcome to the neighborhood, Pastor Thorne.
