Plenty to be thankful for in Maryland City

The holiday season quickly approaches: Are you ready? Our family has lots to be thankful for as I'm sure many of you do too. Sometimes we have to look deep, but there are always positives out there just waiting to be recognized. We give thanks for keeping our children safe during this past year (even during an F-5 tornado in Tuscaloosa, Ala.); we give thanks for us each being healthy and able to give within the community; we give thanks for the teachers and coaches who spend tireless hours with our children helping us teach them to become responsible adults. There are so many things we can each find to be thankful for, so take the time to reflect and thank someone this week for something they did for you this past year!

The Maryland City Recreation Council holds its next meeting Monday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at Brock Bridge Elementary. MCRC basketball bounced to life last week as six county travel teams began practice and now look forward to their first games on Saturday throughout the county. The in-house program also began as players for 10 teams joined together for a skills clinic and evaluation as well as practice. All of the eager 4- to 7-year-olds can't wait for game time to start.

Thank you to all of the volunteer coaches who stepped up to mentor our kids and teach them the importance of physical activity and sportsmanship.

MCRC Soccer decided to hold their banquet in the beginning of January due to all of the holiday cheer. Soccer coaches will contact players with more details in about a week.

What is the best way to celebrate holiday cheer? Many believe it to be through music. If you want to hear a joyful noise some time soon, visit the Maryland City Elementary winter concert Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.; the Meade Middle School orchestra and band concert Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.; or the Meade Middle chorus concert Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. All of our students will make you smile with their holiday cheer.

Many students at Brock Bridge and Maryland City elementary schools prepare for the holidays this season by visiting their school's Holiday Gift Shop. Both schools offer items for the student to purchase for family members throughout this week. Maryland City will also hold their shop open on Thursday night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This provides a great opportunity for students to shop with a parent helper. They learn money management and the spirit of giving at the same time.

Finally, please remember to let me know about any special holiday presentations throughout the neighborhood. The decorations look great already. Maryland City definitely proves to be one of the brightest places to live during the holidays. Keep spreading the holiday cheer and remember to help out those in our community in need. Have a great time preparing for the holidays.
