Man assaults Laurel Police officer after traffic stop

A Laurel Police officer was assaulted by a Laurel man after initiating a traffic stop near the 300 block of Gorman Avenue on Jan. 9, according to a news release from the city.

Santiago Ruiz-Castro, 49, of Washington Boulevard, was charged with traffic violations and assault on a law enforcement officer after being pulled over for driving more than 100 miles per hour around 10:45 p.m. on Jan. 9.

According to the news release, Ruiz-Castro exited the vehicle and attempted to fight the officer. There were no injuries to the arresting officer.

Armed Robbery: On Jan. 5, a taxi cab driver was robbed at gunpoint by four people after dropping them off around 1 a.m. near the 7900 block of Ashford Boulevard. The driver's cell phone, keys and $50 in cash were stolen. Three juveniles, two male and one female, and one man were arrested. Two of the three juveniles are being charged as adults.

Armed Robbery: On Dec. 20, a Laurel High School student was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint on a footpath leading from the school. The victim was transported to Laurel Regional Hospital with minor injuries. Justin Michael Carr, 19, of Laurel, was arrested in connection with the incident, along with a juvenile female.
