Tallies continue to change in tight school board race

Though numbers continue to fluctuate in the close race for the District 1 seat on the Prince George's County Board of Education, Zabrina Epps continues to hold her lead over opponent David Murray.

Wednesday, Nov. 7, the Maryland State Board of Elections reported all District 1 precincts were in, with Epps eking out a win with 12,689 votes over Murray's 12,569. But even though absentee and provisional ballots have yet to be tallied, on Thursday afternoon, Epps had 16,101 votes, still beating out Murray at 15,835.

When the first round of absentee ballots were tallied, though Murray gained 42 more ballots than Epps, Epps was still in the lead with 16,859 votes compared to Murray's 16,655.

At one point, only three votes separated Epps, 40, of Laurel, and Murray, 20, of Bowie.

Early voting benefited Epps: While Murray received more votes on Election Day, Epps pulled in more during early voting — 2,609 to Murray’s 2,070.

Last week, Epps said she was grateful to the District 1 voters for "their support and belief in my ability to help bring a 21st-century school system to Prince George's County.

"My resolve continues to be helping the children of the county get the skills they need to be successful, and I am grateful to God for blessing me with this tremendous opportunity," she said.

Also last week, Murray — who previously ran for the board in 2010 but lost to then-incumbent Rosalind Johnson — said he had not given any thought to future races.

"We definitely are proud of the race we've run, and thankful for the people who came out to vote," he said. "I'm still optimistic; not sure what's to come."

The Prince George's County Board of Elections must still tally provisional ballots, scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14, and a second round of absentee ballots, on Friday, Nov. 16.

A final verification of the vote count, and a certification of the election, is expected Friday, Nov. 16.
