The best jazz in Howard County over the weekend was not found at Merriweather Post Pavilion or any other regular concert venue, and it wasn't played by professionals. The best jazz in Howard this weekend was at Woodbine's Chapel View Farm, on Saturday night, May 19, and was performed by the Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble.

Some 500-600 people showed up for the award-winning student ensemble's annual fundraiser, Jazz Under the Stars. It was an eclectic crowd, attracted not only by the music but by the catered dinner (carved beef, turkey and much more).

"At this end of the county, this is a very well-known event," ensemble Director Barry Enzman said. "People come to it who have really no kids in the school. We had people in their 80s and families with little toddlers.

"The cool thing is, it gets everyone exposed to jazz."

The Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble has won numerous awards, including the highest rating at the Maryland State Jazz Festival, and performed at numerous jazz festivals, including three during a recent tour of Europe.

The annual Jazz Under The Stars event is one of the ensemble's biggest fundraisers, Enzman said, and one the student musicians "absolutely look forward to."

Judging by the enthusiastic crowd Saturday night, they are not the only ones.
