Seven years ago today, Neighbor Ride started helping seniors in our community. Today, Neighbor Ride provides more 1,200 free rides a month for seniors to go to doctor's appointments, religious services, shopping and social activities
This has been a great gift in keeping seniors active in our community. The demand for rides has increased significantly, especially in North Laurel. They need volunteers. The best part of this job is that you can set your own hours and if you have small children, they can join you while you help others.
If you would be interested in volunteering, call Neighbor Ride at 410-884-7433 or email volunteer@neighborride.org. If you are interested in their services or to learn more about this organization, go to http://www.neighborride.org.
Did you miss taking your expired or unwanted prescription drugs to the North Laurel Police Community Center? If so, here is a way to dispose of the medication safely. It is not a good idea to flush them because they will get into the drinking water.
Place the pills or liquid into a zip lock bag with coffee grounds, flour or even kitty litter so that the medicine is absorbed into those substances. Then you can throw away the bag in the trash. You can recycle the bottle that the medicine was in but remember to remove or mark out the information on the label before doing so.
For more information on how to dispose of medication or other disposal locations, go to http://www.disposemymeds.org.
Getting ready for the holidays? Here is a great way to learn how to decorate naturally. Pat Greenwald, a Master Gardener with the University of Maryland Extension will be presenting "Decking the Halls with Natural Materials," to show you how to turn materials in nature, at the grocery store or from a winter's garden into decorations.
She will be at the Savage Branch Library, 9525 Durness Lane in North Laurel, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. Call the library at 410-880-5975 to register. What a great way to get into the holiday spirit.
