Drug prevention program 'Teen2Teen' coming to Reservoir High School

As parents, we all worry about our children and the choices they make. It is important that we all keep informed and learn how to help our children make the right decisions. We have some help.

The Reservoir High School PTSA and HC DrugFree have teamed up to present a special drug abuse prevention program called "Teen 2 Teen." It will be held Monday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m at the Reservoir High School Cafeteria. There will be a panel of teens, who will explain about how they dealt with their substance abuse issues as well as drug and alcohol abuse counselor Mark Donovan. He will answer questions you might have pertaining to substance abuse as well as explaining what signs to look for.

The program is open to any child 13 and older with a parent and you do not have to have a child at Reservoir to attend.

One group of youths that are being very proactive is the youth ministry at Emmanuel United Methodist Church. They will be holding their annual Fall Fun Day Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be lots of activities, including a visit by the Howard County Fire and Rescue, a moon bounce, food and crafts and a story-telling tent.

There is a small fee for some of the activities, but mainly this is about fun according to director Donna Meoli. This is a rain-or-shine event at the church, 10755 Scaggsville Road. For more information call 301-725-5200.

This is the last call for crafters for the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church's annual Christmas Bazaar. The Bazaar will be held Nov. 11 and 12 and spaces cost $65 each and include a table. Crafters need to sign up by Saturday, Oct. 22. If you are interested, call Martie Nagle at 301-490-9446 in the evenings or email MCLNagle01@verizon.net.

The Laurel Woods Elementary School PTA received grant money for the Howard County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council so they could hold two artist-in-residency programs this year. The first will be with the fifth-grade class this fall. Nada Brahma of World Music will be working with them for four weeks. Then, next spring the second graders will be spending four weeks with Diane Macklin, a Master Storyteller.

October is National Crime Prevention Month. Our local community officer, Pfc. Joshua Mouton, would like to remind you of ways you can help prevent crime.

Keep your doors and windows to your house, car and garage locked. Make sure you turn on your outside lights at night. If you have an alarm system, use it. Keep valuables out of sight and keep the window and door areas clear of bushes and other things that a criminal can use to hide behind.

You can also have him meet with your community association for a more one-on-one talk about crime and ways to keep safe. If you are interested, call Mouton at 410-313-0636.
