North Laurel: Reservoir High School students raise money for Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation

There are many ways for high school kids to celebrate homecoming. Reservoir High School, led by the girls field hockey team, raised more than $500 on homecoming day for the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation. B+ stands for B Positive and is a charity that has kids helping kids with cancer by raising funds to help support them. What a positive message Reservoir sent out on homecoming day.

Bibi Perrotte-Foston, president of the North Laurel Civic Association would like to invite you to a family picnic Oct. 9 at 12:30 p.m. at the High Ridge Park Pavilion, 10100 Superior Ave. There will be food, games, raffle and even a disc jockey. Anyone interested needs to RSVP to nlca.eventbrite.com by Oct. 5. If you have any questions, call Pam Peseux at 301-335-1725 or email pmp@cimperium.com. Perrotte-Foston hopes this will become an annual event here.

The Reservoir High School golf team has joined with Soles4Souls representative Rachel Quade and are collecting gently-worn footwear or any kind for distribution to those in need. Reservoir has two collection bins at the school — one in student services and the other is in the atrium. The goal is to collect 50,000 pairs of shoes by Nov 1.

I heard from Emma Young, the police community liaison from the North Laurel Police Office. She would like to let everyone know of two events coming up. The first one is a medication disposal event Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at all police offices. You can drop off any unused or unwanted medication at either of the North Laurel police offices, the Southern District Station, 11226 Scaggsville Road, or the North Laurel Office, 9105 All Saints Road, and they will dispose of it properly.

Emma also wanted you to know that the Howard County Police Department is starting to take sign-ups for its two-day collision avoidance training for drivers 16 to 19 years old. They will be holding classes Oct. 21 and 22, Nov. 18 and 19 or Dec. 9 and 10. The fee is $95 for the two days. For more information, call 410-313-3758.

Do you have things to be recycled? Liz Feighner, the chairwoman of the Green Team at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, let me know it will be holding its annual community-wide recycling and Bikes for the World collection Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Goodwill Industries will be at the church to collect electronics in any condition, except televisions, and any other donations. They will take rigid plastics, household batteries, Styrofoam, packing peanuts and eyeglasses. Bikes for the World will also be there collecting bikes and portable sewing machines. They will send them to developing countries and ask for a $10 donation to help pay for shipping.

For more information on recycling, email Feighner at eumcgreenteam@gmail.com or 301-661-7087. For more information on the Bikes for the World, email Perry Wilson at perrywilson@verizon.net or call 301-362-1154.
