Girl Scout Troop 1365 decided to use money earned from selling cookies to help the homeless and to earn the Bronze Award.
They wanted to help others, but they wanted more than just a quick project. They wanted to touch the hand and hopefully the heart of those they helped. They decided they wanted to cook a meal and serve it at a homeless shelter.
Howard County shelters will not let the girls serve the meals, so they found a shelter in Silver Spring. They were making a meal for over 100 guests. They planned the menu, met with a chef from the 8407 Kitchen Bar Restaurant to learn how to cook for a large group, gather donations of food and toiletries as gifts. They all made cheesecakes to bring for dessert.
On March 17, the girls went to St. Luke Lutheran Church and cooked a meal, set the tables and even set flowers on them. They served their meal to 114 people and then cleaned up afterwards.
They were told that it made the guest's day to be treated with such respect and dignity. Many took the flowers with them when they left.
Leader Joann Belt and Assistant Leader Elisabeth Kirk were very proud of the girls. Troop 1365 consists of Juliana Belt, Maria Kirk, Elysa Mola, Sara Moore, Emma Richmond, Sarah Rinker, Divija Sadula and Emani Young. What impressive ladies they are.
