I am excited to announce that starting with this column, I am now covering all of the North Laurel and Savage communities. For those of us who live in this area, we know our communities do many things together and I cannot wait to work more with our friends in Savage.
So if you have news for any part of North Laurel, including Scaggsville, Hammond and Rocky Gorge areas or any part of Savage, please let me know so I can share the information in this column.
Do you ever feel like you would like to step up to become more of a leader in our area but are not sure how to do that? The Horizon Foundation is offering its Community Leadership Academy to area residents who are 21 and older. The academy offers training to those who want to volunteer in our community. The cost of the program is covered by the Horizon Foundation and will meet March 10 and 31, April 21, May 12 and June 2 and 16. They only take 20 for each class, so apply now.

Reservoir High School students in advanced art and photography class have done a fantastic job representing our area at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.
A little more than 400 entries were selected for awards statewide and 41 of them were from Reservoir students. Twelve won gold and will move on to the national level. Those are:

We will get a chance to see their art on display, March 1-20 at the Columbia Art Center, 6011 Foreland Garth, in Columbia.
Calling all girls that will be entering eighth and ninth grade next fall. The Women's Giving Circle of Howard County is taking applications for their residential summer camp. The camp will be held June 24-30 with programs to build leadership skills.
