Glenelg United Methodist planning a night of music

Earthquakes and hurricanes and stink bugs – oh, my! We certainly experienced an adventurous end to our summer. Many homes in our community lost power for several days following Hurricane Irene and our local schools also took a hit and could not open with the rest of Howard County on the already-delayed date of Aug. 30. Now, I hope, everyone is returning to a normal routine.

If you could use an evening of family fun and belly laughs, mark your calendar for Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. The Mt. View Middle School PTA invites you to join friends and neighbors at the James Munsey Comedy Hypnosis Show, a highly acclaimed performance that will take place across the street from Mt.View in the Marriotts Ridge High School auditorium at 12100 Woodford Drive.

To watch a sneak peek of the performer or print a ticket order form, go to the MVMS PTA website at mvmspta.yolasite.com. Tickets cost $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Families can drop off their order forms in the main school office anytime during school hours or reserve tickets through Kellie Cimerola at 443-812-6259 or kcimerola@yahoo.com. These tickets will be available for pickup at Will Call the evening of the event. Alternatively, students can purchase tickets during lunch September 19-30. Come enjoy the show!

Howard County high school students who plan to drive to school must attend a mandatory safety presentation with a parent before they can obtain a parking permit. Marriotts Ridge High School will host one of these safety presentations Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. For more information, call the school at 410-313-5568.

On September 18, Glenelg United Methodist Church will present the next installment in its free community concert series: an evening of classical and jazz favorites featuring Vince DiMartino, a leading trumpet performer and teacher. Other musicians include Bob Boguslaw on piano, Aaron Clay on bass, Chris Rose on drums, church music director Doug Burian on trumpet, and church organist Richard Cartwright on organ and piano. The concert will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with a reception following.

The church address is 13900 Burntwoods Road, in Glenelg. Call the office at 410-489-7260 with any questions.

Don't forget our feathered friends as fall approaches. The Howard County Bird Club is once again selling seed through Wildlife Authority, which recently moved to a new location: 3275 Bethany Lane, Suite B, in Ellicott City (near the Route 40 intersection, across from Pizza Hut).

All profits and donations from the seed sale will help preserve bird habitats internationally. Go to to learn more or to print an order form. All orders must be prepaid and are due by Sept. 16 for pickup at Wildlife Authority Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will receive a 15 percent discount on other Wildlife Authority merchandise purchased that day, as well as a coupon for 15 percent off merchandise purchased Dec. 2-11. Direct any questions to Michael O'Sullivan at 410-997-0342 or fr84wrdr@yahoo.com.

I would like to include a final reminder about three upcoming events:

On September 10, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church will host a community yard sale to benefit its youth fellowship program. The sale will run from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the church parking lot, at 12430 Scaggsville Road (Rt. 216), in Highland.

WomenFest, a free wellness event sponsored by the Howard County Office on Aging, Department of Citizen Services, will take place Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gary J. Arthur Community Center, in Glenwood. The day will include health screenings and exercise demonstrations, seminars on health, beauty, and fashion, and 50 vendors exhibiting products and services of interest to women. Go to http://www.howardcountyaging.org to view a complete schedule of the day's events.

Also on Sept. 15, Success in Style will host its Pink Bag Lunch fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mercedes Benz of Baltimore, 6631 Baltimore National Pike, in Catonsville. Tickets cost $40 and proceeds will support the SIS mission: providing free business attire and professional coaching to Howard County men and women in crisis.
