Lisbon/Woodbine: Poplar Springs United Methodist Church getting set for annual Christmas Mart

The Poplar Springs United Methodist Church will be holding its Christmas Mart Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a bake table, crafts, White Elephant tables and a free children's "make and take" table. There will also be a silent auction featuring paintings from local artists.

Santa will be visiting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch will also be available to purchase. This is one holiday bazaar that you don't want to miss.

I quilt every Tuesday evening with several friends, including Ann Horner, who is a member of the Poplar Springs Methodist Church. The last few weeks, Ann has been working on items to sell at the bazaar, which include beautiful, quilted Christmas stockings and unusual purses. It's worth the trip just to buy Ann's donations because she is a perfectionist, and her products are always the very best.

The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services recently awarded Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, health officer Peter Beilenson and Healthy Howard Executive Director Liddy Garcia-Bunuel with the Healthy Living Innovation Award.

I think if Ulman keeps receiving all these awards, he will have to build another house just for his awards! Many thanks go to our county executive for leading Howard County into the future with programs that are meant to improve our quality of living.

The Lisbon United Methodist Church is partnering with Bridges to Housing Stability to collect household items that can be donated to families who are fighting homelessness. Items needed include; beds, pots and pans, dressers, lamps, linens, dishes, and tables.

Unfortunately, this organization does not have a storage facility for large items. Therefore, they can only take large items when there is a need and they can be directly moved into a home.

Howard County recently unveiled the county's first plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle charging station. This new facility is at the Thomas Dorsey Building at 9250 Bendix Road, in Columbia. I think this will be the first of many such facilities that we will be seeing in this metropolitan area since hybrids seem to be the wave of the future.

Ulman recently also unveiled the County's new free notification system service, NotifyMeHoward, that allows the county to deliver critical information directly into email inboxes and/or mobile devices of subscribers who register for this service.

Participants will automatically receive emergency notification from the National Weather Service, the police department, department of fire and rescue services and the Office of Emergency Management. There will also be an option to register for announcements from the Department of Recreation and Parks programs, the Department of Public Works road projects, and County Government news releases.
