Lisbon/Woodbine: Glenelg United Methodist to open west county branch of Howard County Food Bank

In an effort to meet the needs of the community, the Glenelg United Methodist Church is opening a satellite location of the Howard County Food Bank in October. The church is on Burntwoods Road, just down the street from Glenelg High School. Just as a reminder, there is also a Food Cellar at St. Michael's Catholic Church on St. Michael's Road.

It's hard to believe that in our county where the median income is one of the highest in the country that there are families in need of food. For those of us who are fortunate enough to be in an economic position to care for our families, this is a great opportunity to give back to our friends and neighbors in need. I'm sure both food pantries will welcome donations of either non-perishable foods or monetary donations.

It's almost time when the leaves will fall and the raking will begin. Instead of having to haul those bags of leaves to the landfill, the Howard County Master Gardeners will be happy to pick up your leaves as part of the Rake and Take program. The Master Gardeners regard leaves as one of the magic ingredients for making "black gold," otherwise known as compost. If you're like to join the program, email to phooker9440@gmail.com and include your address and telephone number.

The Master Gardeners will contact you to make arrangements to pick up your leaves. Compost is made up of "greens," which is green vegetative material and "browns," which is leaves. Leaves happen to be a wonderful source of minerals and other nutrients that give added value to the compost.

If you're interested in starting your own compost pile, I'm sure the Master Gardeners would be more than happy to educate you.
