St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will be holding its monthly Community Feast Thursday, Sept. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. This month's menu is one of my favorites, chicken pot pie, with all the fixin's. Chicken pot pie brings back such happy memories of my childhood when my mother would make the pot pie from scratch with that mouth-watering crust.
As always, Smokin' Hot Catering will be donating the food. Dine-in and carry-outs will be available. The cost is $9 per person or a maximum of $30 per family. The proceeds from this month's feast will go to send the church's teens on a Pilgrimage in 2013. The church is at 2892 Route 97, in Glenwood. Smokin' Hot Catering also has a restaurant in Glenwood at the Inwood Shopping Center, on the corner of Route 97 and Carrs Mill Road.
After the month of August that we've had in this area, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman has declared September "Preparedness Month." In one week, our community experienced a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that jammed cell phone lines and Hurricane Irene that knocked down trees, caused high winds with heavy rains and left 47,000 homes, businesses and schools without power.
In an effort to help each of us be better prepared in the future, the county has developed a list for an emergency kit along with preparedness tips. Both can be found at http://www.ready.gov/america/beinformed/hurricanes.htmlhttp://www.ready.gov/america/beinformed/hurricanes.html.
Along with the website, the county is sponsoring an "Emergency Preparedness Day" Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at The Columbia mall. Information on preparedness and safety will be distributed. There will also be displays from local public safety representatives, including Howard County's Office of Emergency Management.
