Getting out to local events can help curb the winter doldrums

Now that the holidays are over, the winter doldrums will be upon us. There's a way to fight them by planning to attend some of the local events coming up.

St. Michael's Catholic Church's Knights of Columbus and Ladies Auxiliary will be holding a pasta celebration Jan. 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. The menu will include fettucini Alfredo with chicken and asparagus (my favorite), spaghetti with meatballs, rigatoni with Bolognese sauce with sausage, garlic bread, salad and beverages. Desserts will be available to purchase. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12 and $25 for a family of four.

The Howard County Department of Citizens Services, Office of Children's Services will be hosting its annual preschool/child care information fair, "Children On Board" Jan. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ten Oaks Ballroom, 5000 Signal Bell Lane, in Clarksville. Admission is free; however, attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Howard County Food Bank.

The fair will provide an opportunity for parents, guardians, and child care personnel to gather information on child care and pre-school programs, as well as an opportunity to talk to teachers and program directors.

The Howard County Library System has received a $100,000 federal grant to launch iTech, a digital learning initiative for middle- and high-school students to elevate science, technology, engineering and math learning.

Howard County was one of 12 applicants to receive this grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. More than 100 other educational institutions competed for these grants.

The iTech project combines state-of-the-art multimedia tools, software, technical consultants, mentors, and networking in a youth-oriented atmosphere. The project will open this spring.

Many of our neighbors enjoy an evening of bingo at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Monday nights. I work in the kitchen once a month. When it snows, I never know whether to try to get there to work or if bingo is cancelled. St. Michael's inclement weather policy follows the Howard County Public Schools' policy for early closings on school days. If the schools do not close early, a decision on opening for bingo will be made at 4 p.m. To check for bingo closings, go to http://www.stmichaelspoplarsprings.org.
