Glenwood/Glenelg: Help less fortunate neighbors with donation to Glenelg United Methodist food bank

While you are getting your plans together for Thanksgiving dinner next week, be sure to set another place at your table for the Howard County Food Bank.

The monthly food bank returns to Glenelg United Methodist Church Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9 to 10 a.m. to help distribute food just in time to help give to our less fortunate neighbors a joyous start to their holiday season.

The food comes to Glenelg United Methodist on the third Saturday of each month and will give out groceries from both the Howard County Food Ban and the GUMC Pantry for those in need of assistance. For additional information on how to pick up food or assist with donations, call the church at 410-489-7260 or email glenelgumcpantry@gmail.com.

The Glenwood Lions Club will hold their monthly meeting Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Gary J. Arthur Community Center's Activities Room. This month's presentation will be given by Dr. Joel Goodman, a.k.a. StarDoc, who will share information about the Howard County Astronomical League.

Come out and hear some stories about the fun of stargazing. Dinner will not be served at this month's meeting, however if you are looking for a dinner option, plan to stop by the Community Feast at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, on Route 97 in Glenwood, will be hosting its monthtl community feast Thursday, Nov. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. This date is a week earlier than usual — the regular feast day is the fourth Thursday — because of Thanksgiving next Thursday. All in the community are invited to attend this wonderful event.

It seems everyone is so busy these days, and it is increasingly difficult to put a healthy meal on the table for the family. Why not take the night off from cooking, and enjoy a meal lovingly prepared by Smokin' Hot Catering, at an affordable family price ($9 per person or $30 max per family). In addition to a great meal for the family, you are also helping a good cause.

Each month the church designates a charity or cause to benefit from the proceeds of the meal. St. Andrew's would like to thank the community for making the October meal so successful (more than 140 people served) and helping to raise money for Worldwide Shelters.

My how time flies. It seems hard to believe but on this day seven years ago, Neighbor Ride launched its volunteer-based transportation service with the mission to decrease isolation and improve the quality of life for Howard County's older residents. Since that day in 2004, Neighbor Ride's dedicated team of volunteers has coordinated and provided more than 46,000 trips for medical appointments, social outings, religious services, fitness activities, volunteer commitments, shopping and other personal needs. In the words of two passengers, "We have been able to retain our independence because of Neighbor Ride."

It seems that these days there is a need for more assistance. Demand for Neighbor Ride's transportation service has increased sharply in recent months, with monthly trips provided topping 1,200 in both October and November. Volunteers are truly the "driving force" behind Neighbor Ride; and new drivers are urgently needed now, as demand reaches all-time highs.

Volunteering as a Neighbor Ride Driver is an incredibly flexible and rewarding service opportunity. Daytime, evening and weekend volunteers are needed and drivers may choose to provide rides that are convenient to their homes, offices and daily routines. No set schedule is required. Parents are also welcome to bring their children along when volunteering for a wonderful intergenerational experience, as well as a chance to teach children that community service extends beyond the school years.

To learn more about this community service opportunity, call Neighbor Ride's volunteer coordinators at 410-884-RIDE (7433) or email volunteer@neighborride.org. You may also go to Neighbor Ride's website at http://www.neighborride.org.
