I recently received a notice that the Dayton Post Office is being evaluated for reduced window service hours, and even possible closure.

Dayton residents should have received a survey to express their preference and share comments. A public meeting at the post office (not sure where they will put all the people!) on Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. will answer questions and provide additional information.

The meeting will also be an opportunity to provide input on the preferred time of day the post office will be open under the proposed reduced window service hours.

On Friday, Jan. 25, the Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble will make its debut concert of the school year at 7 p.m. at the Glenwood Community Center.

Tickets are $5, with proceeds going toward the band's 2013 tour of Europe. Seating will be limited in the intimate Community Center venue (about 200 seats), so be sure to get your tickets early.

Tickets are available from any jazz band member, the front office of Glenelg High School, or at the Glenwood Community Center. Come on and support this fine group and enjoy a great evening of jazz.

In December, the Youth Empowerment Summit Students of Folly Quarter Middle School, with the help of Student Services, coordinated a school-wide fundraiser, Pennies for Patients. Students raised over $300 during this collection of spare change, which will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The funds are donated in memory of former Folly Quarter student Amanda Post. The money will be used to support blood cancer research and local patient services.

The students of the Youth Empowerment Summit thank the school community for the generous donations.

After taking a break in December, the St. Andrews Community Feast is back. The next feast will be Jan. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Andrew's Church, 2892 Route 97 in Glenwood.

The January menu will feature an Italian meal donated by Smokin' Hot Bar & Grille. This dinner is open to the entire community. The cost is $9 per person, with a maximum charge of $30 per family. Children 5 and under eat free. The proceeds of the evening's dinner will benefit the church's 2013 J2A Youth Pilgrimage.

Do you have a child who will begin middle school in the fall? Folly Quarter Middle School will host a 5th grade parent orientation on Feb. 5, beginning at 6 p.m., with a special GT orientation following at 7 p.m. Staff will be present to discuss and answer questions about the middle school program, schedule and course offerings. Snow date is Feb. 12.

June 7 is months away, but that is the date for the 2013 Relay for Life of Western Howard County.
