Recently Centennial High School students participated in the National Writing Day - a National Council of Teachers of English program.
"It was the coolest day for me in my teaching career," Centennial advanced writing teacher Corey O'Brien said.
Although a few of Centennial High's english and dance classes participated in the writing day, it was O'Brien's advanced composition class that really rocked the school with their campaign to get every student engaged in writing.
Dressed in T-shirts that the students hand painted with the words "Why Write?," the advanced composition classmates descended upon the student body divided into five paroles, each with a different mission.
The "Spontaneous Haiku Patrol" encouraged students to write a Japanese Haiku poem on the spot, the "Brain Drain" Patrol called for students to write the exact words they thought as they thought them for 90 seconds, the "Words Happen" Patrol motivated students to make a list of words through association starting with one word, the "Banner Patrol" coaxed students at lunch time to write whatever was on their mind on a big homemade banner and the "Sidewalk" parole rallied students to the front of the school to write poems on the sidewalk with chalk.
"The students were very professional and classy about it (their writing campaign), from the brainstorming to the preparation to the execution. Their enthusiasm is contagious and I cannot wait to see what they do next," O'Brien said.
"Write" on, Centennial students! Keep up the good work.
