River Hill High School marching band back in tune after two-year hiatus

After a two-year break, the River Hill High School marching band under the direction of Joe Fischer has returned with a wonderful halftime show. They are performing the music from the Cirque de Soleil show, "La Nouba."

You have only one more opportunity to see them in action as they perform Friday, Oct. 28 during the Hawks' final home game of the regular season against Glenelg at 7 p.m. Don't miss it.

Local dentist Rashmi Parmar and staff sent a note of appreciation for all who participated in their candy buy-back program in past years and an invitation for you and others to do it again this year. It's part of Operation Home Front to send candy and supplies to our troops on active duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and other destinations.

After children are finished trick-or-treating, they are invited to bring some of that candy to Dr. Parmar's office Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 2:30 to 7 p.m. or Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 2 and 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The joint was jumping at Clarksville Elementary recently and so were the students. First lady Michelle Obama kicked off a 24-hour period with her one-minute of jumping jacks. It's part of her "Let's Move" campaign to encourage kids and families to get healthy and active. The goal is to set a Guinness Book of World Records mark for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period.

Who says exercise can't be fun? The kids had a blast. Weather added to the fun. Some grades were able to jump at recess outdoors before the rain. Others jumped in the cafeteria or hallways by classroom. No one wanted to be left out. There were two independent witnesses to certify the jumpers as well as timers and counters. You could feel the energy and everyone is eagerly awaiting the results.

Way to go, kids. Remind your parents that adults need to move, too. Maybe you can come up with a fun family plan to move bodies of all ages.

Congratulations to Maddie Houck and Nikki Datta on winning the gold medal in policy debate in the recent Baltimore Catholic Forensics League Tournament. Maddie also earned the bronze speaker medal.

Congratulations to Ifeoluwa Olujobi on being named a semifinalist for the National Achievement Scholarship. Ife is one of 10 Howard County students to have this distinction and one of only 1,6000 nationwide, but we won't know until January if she's a finalist. Fingers are crossed at River Hill High and throughout the community. Best wishes, Ife.
