We did it! Daughter-in-law Melissa Sanford and I successfully completed Disney's Wine and Dine Half-Marathon Relay Oct. 1 and 2. The race didn't begin until 10 p.m. and my 4.8-mile run/walk took 74 minutes. Any runner would call that slow, but it's my best time ever — that's because its also my first time. Melissa ran the other 8.3 miles and is working up to a full marathon. We finished 347th out of 403 female teams. The average runner was age 34 — I am definitely better than average on that score, though not quite the oldest. It was a real rush.
If you'd like an adrenaline rush, come to the free Hawkfest at River Hill High Friday, Oct. 14 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The school's marching band will kick off the annual homecoming celebration in the bus loop at 4:30 p.m.
Next, the action moves to Stage 1 with yo-yo artist Sam Groner and a drama promo and later on, a jump rope competition. Move to Stage 2 to hear the bands Riot Mountain and Rising East.
Each River Hill class will have a five-minute performance and exhibit beginning at 6 p.m. with the Class of 2015. Throughout the event there will be fun and games — a moon bounce, WALL-E's Junk Yard, Donald's Ducky Ducks, Air Bud Football Toss and Bobbing for Poison Apples. Food items under $5 each will be available. Come on out.
