Golf: Lee's big day helps Marriotts Ridge past River Hill

Marriotts Ridge sophomore Rachel Lee scored a season-high 28 points and the Mustangs held off an early-round push from River Hill Tuesday, earning an important 53-44 victory at Hobbit's Glen.

The Mustangs improved to 7-0 and now sit as the only undefeated girls team. River Hill, meanwhile, dropped to 6-1.

Lee, who was an important piece of last year's Marriotts Ridge team that finished 11-0, says she was well aware of what was at stake.

"The first three holes I had butterflies in my stomach because I wasn't sure if we were going to win or lose. I knew how important this match was," Lee said.

Even with the nerves, Lee came out and played a nearly flawless round. She hit almost every green in regulation, making eight pars and one birdie to tie her best-ever high school score.

But more important than her ball striking were the strokes she saved on the greens.

"I had all two-putts and one-putts, that was a really big difference for me," Lee said. "I was kind of waiting for a non three-putt round all season and today was the day."

River Hill kept things interesting behind senior Ariana Dial's 19-point day, highlighted by a par on the fourth hole. Kendra Rosnick (10 points), Stephanie Feldblum (8) and Deena Damschroder (7) followed Dial.

The Hawks were actually up by two in the overall team competition following the fifth hole, where Damschroder made her only par of the day.

But things quickly unraveled for River Hill after that.

Marissa Davey, who had struggled to just two points over the first four holes, played her final five in 12 points to finish with 14. A par on No. 5 sparked Davey's round.

"I was so happy for her when she got that first par, because she finally broke that 0- and 1-(point) train," Lee said. "I knew that once she broke that she would keep on making pars the rest of the way."

Marriotts Ridge's second two golfers Ariel Biegel and Michelle Kim finished with nine and two points, respectively, to round out the scoring and lead to the nine-point win.
