Golf: Wilde Lake boys, River Hill girls earn tri-meet sweep

With mother nature wreaking havoc on the opening week of the golf season, Wilde Lake, Mt. Hebron and River Hill decided to get creative Wednesday in an effort to play a little catch up.

In the first tri-meet since golf became a varsity sport in 2005, the three schools squared off against one another at the same time at Hobbit's Glenn. And when the dust settled, it was the Wilde Lake boys and River Hill girls that emerged as the big winners.

Wilde Lake's boys put up 89 points, outpacing the 83 points from River Hill and 69 from Mt. Hebron. River Hill's girls meanwhile cruised, with a team total of 51, past Mt. Hebron (13 points) and Wilde Lake (9).

While it was the first official match of the fall for both River Hill and Mt. Hebron, Wilde Lake's boys already had gotten a win under its belt against Centennial last week. The momentum from that victory carried over as Tyler Silberberg had 26 points, David Yancich put up 25 and the team improved to 3-0.

"It's definitely a confidence boost to beat River Hill because we had that tie against them last year. We were right there to beat them and we didn't, so it was nice to get the job done this time," Silberberg said. "We can still be better, but we are heading in the right direction."

Behind its top two, Wilde Lake also got 19 points apiece from Joe Boccher and Rafey Iqbal.

River Hill's boys did put up a fight, getting a team-high 26 points from senior Greg Karas. Behind him, Zach Lynes (20 points), Henry Ko (19) and Matt Gray (18) all had solid rounds as well.

Gene Yoo highlighted Mt. Hebron's day with 19 points.

On the girls side, Ariana Dial led the way to a 2-0 day for the Hawks. She put up 16 points, followed by 14 from Kendra Rosnik, 13 from Stephanie Feldblum and eight from Lexi Hayward.
