Golf: Wildecats roar back against Marriotts Ridge

One day after playing its worst match of the season, Wilde Lake bounced back with its best.

Following a 93-76 loss to Glenelg on Tuesday at Cattail Creek Country Club, the Wildecats came out against Marriotts Ridge Wednesday at Hobbits Glen and put it all together for a 98-93 shootout victory.

"I was really proud of the guys for how they battled back and responded after yesterday," Wilde Lake coach Diane Caporaletti said. "I think they were slightly embarrassed … we didn't just lose, we got blown out. I challenged each of them. Today was their chance to show what they're capable of."

Led by a career-best 30 points (three-under par) from Tyler Silberberg, Wilde Lake answered the call. Rafey Iqbal also set a career-high with 26 points of his own, while David Yancich and Matt Shin each chipped in with 21, as the Wildecats broke the 90-point barrier for the first time this season.

Wilde Lake (5-1) needed every single one of its points, as Marriotts Ridge (2-2) got 27 points from Chris Yoo and 26 from Michael Dorsch on its way to its second straight 93-point day. The Mustangs had beaten Howard 93-81 on Tuesday.

But Wilde Lake's consistency from top to bottom on Wednesday won out.

"Everyone on the team finally played well on the same day and we'd been waiting for that all year," Silberberg said. "It's hard to explain how happy I was."

Silberberg himself played almost flawlessly from tee to green. He hit every green in regulation and all but two fairways, helping him finish with three birdies and no bogeys.

After shooting a two-under-par round against Glenelg on Tuesday, Silberberg said he just kept it going.

"I carried over my ball striking with my irons from yesterday and then drove the ball even better," he said. "It was mistake-free golf."
