Girls soccer: Hawks Hamer in championship goal

In a much anticipated showdown between two unbeaten teams, River Hill scored in the last minute of the game to beat Centennial, 2-1, Tuesday and win the county championship.

Alex Hamer got the winning goal. She settled a pass from Katie Arensmeier on the right flank, beat a defender, turned the corner and shot from about 25 yards out, sending the ball over the keeper's reach. To add some drama to the late shot, the ball hit the side post before careening into the net for the game-winner.

It is the first county title for the Clarksville school since 2008, but the ninth in the school's history.

Though River Hill has one county game remaining — Atholton on Thursday — the Hawks are now 9-0-1 and have wrapped up the title. Centennial, in second place, also has one matchup — Marriotts Ridge — but is now 7-1-2. A tie tonight would have likely meant co-champions.

Marriotts Ridge is currently in third, with a 6-1-3 record.

"What a way to lose!" said Centennial coach Steve Baxter, who called the goal a "fluke."

"The River Hill player hit what I believe was intended to be a cross. It was at a fairly deep angle and from near the sideline. It sailed over our goalkeeper's head and hit the post to go in the goal," he said.

River Hill took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game when Sheridan Street, off a pass from playmaker Arensmeier, beat two defenders in the box. But just as she was about to take the shot, she was fouled by Centennial keeper Katie Donegan.

"It was a close play and they got the call," said Baxter.

Liz Bamber scored on the ensuing penalty kick.

"I think Centennial out played us for about first 10 minutes or so," said River Hill's Brian Song. But after Bamber scored, "it was even through the rest of the half."

Both teams had a few chances in the second half but Centennial finally scored to tie the game with about four minutes left in the game.

"One of our defenders sent the ball down the line to Darby Sinunu," said Baxter. "Darby took a dribble and split the defenders with a pass over to Jordan Coburn who had pushed forward. Jordan passed over to Anna Mitchell who took a touch and hit the shot into the upper left corner of the goal. This was a great passing sequence, resulting in a great goal."

Both defense played well as did the goalies, said Song.

"While the team is disappointed in the result, we feel very strongly about our ability to compete with anyone," said Baxter. "Tonight's game validates that 100 per cent. I congratulate River Hill on winning the county title. They have a good squad. Perhaps we will meet again in the region final if we are both fortunate enough to get there. It is not going to be easy, but we look forward to the playoffs and let the chips fall where they may."

Reservoir can't corral Mustangs

Taylor Hensh finished off a first-half corner kick from Alexis Zadjura to give the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs a 1-0 win over Reservoir.

"After going into double overtime with River Hill the night before, I didn't know how much gas my girls had left in their tanks," said Marriotts Ridge coach Robin Grey. "Tonight, they left everything they had out on that field. The heart, hustle and intensity my girls showed impressed me beyond words. I couldn't be more proud."

The win snaps a three-game win streak by Reservoir.

Jenna Bergquist had five saves for Marriotts Ridge, which is now 6-1-2 in the county and 6-2-3 overall.

Megan Fowler had four saves for Reservoir.

Howard shuts out Bears

Howard scored twice in the second half to seal a 3-0 win over Hammond.

Christine Robinson put the Lions on the scoreboard in the first half, finishing off a pass from Caitlyn Whitford. Taylor Gant initiated the play with a cross to Whitford.

Gant got her own goal in the second half after dribbling around two defenders and shooting from inside the box.

Sasha Brown completed the evening's scoring by touching in a corner kick from Amy Williams.

Hammond had 10 shots on goal, said coach Mike Koplow. Howard had 16 shots on goal and Julie Reed had 13 saves.

Goals scarce, but Glenelg needs just one

Becca Pontius scored unassisted in the second half as Glenelg beat Mt. Hebron, 1-0.

"It was a very good game," said Glenelg coach Dean Sheridan. "Hebron was very tough. The game had an interesting flow, as teams would dominate one end or the other for periods of time, rather than a back and forth game."

Pontius' goal came when she "turned on the ball from about 20 yards, in the middle of a 'scrum' and it went in," added Sheridan.

Brooke Carey had two saves for Glenelg. Tahlia Tavai had six for Mt. Hebron.

Last-minute win

Oakland Mills scored in the last minute of regulation play to beat Wilde Lake, 2-1. Kathlene Striano got the game-winner.

Wilde Lake struck first, scoring in the first three minutes of the game.

"We came out really flat and not winning the 50/50 balls," said Oakland Mills coach Christina Bleivik. The Scorpions did not get the tying goal until midway through the second half when Nicole Twardowicz scored off a pass from Rachel Hunter.

Gillian Sawyer scored the Wilde Lake goal.
