Girls soccer: Howard upsets Reservoir in overtime

Howard pulled the upset of the young season by shutting out the Class 3A state champ, Reservoir, 1-0, in the second overtime period. Jenny DelCoco got the winning goal, assisted by Kelsey Wright in the 99th minute of the game.

"Kelsey found her way onto a breakaway and was 1-on-1 with the keeper," said new head coach Nick Zaron, whose team won just four county games last year. "The goalkeeper made a save on Kelsey's shot, and Jenny followed it up and put the ball in the back of the net.

"Tonight was a total team effort," he added. "I'm so proud of the way everyone performed. The defense — Gusty Mead, Leah Bialecki, Brooke Hinkel and Taylor Gant — held us together and came up huge on a lot of plays."

Zaron said it was clear the past week of bad weather and lack of practices affected both teams "as we weren't the best with our feet and possession, but every player gutted it out and played hard until the end.

"I think fatigue started to set in with both teams, as the last 10 minutes of regular play and in overtime, more space was found between both teams midfielders and backs, which opened up opportunities," Zaron added.

"It was a game that we just simply didn't capitalize on our chances," said Reservoir coach Josh Sullivan. "We outplayed them the entire second half and they just continued to kick the ball back to our defense."

But late in the second overtime, "they cleared it up to our defense and they won a 50/50 ball and went in 1-on-1 and beat our keeper."

"We've got to give them credit where credits due, but we have to get better at finishing," Sullivan added. "All things said, I was pumped at how well our youth did in the game. As long as they keep their heads up and fight through our early struggles, we will continue to get better. We can't create that many solid chances and not continue to score. Sooner or later well break through."

Hensh shines in Mustangs' win

Oakland Mills was shut out by Marriotts Ridge, 2-0. Taylor Hensh scored both goals, the first of her varsity career, with one assist by Morgan Crable.

Oakland Mills keeper Erin Yarn had eight saves and Marriotts Ridge's Jenna Bergquist had one, said Marriotts Ridge coach Robin Grey. Bergquist recorded the shutout in her first start as the Mustangs' varsity keeper.

Both Hensh and Bergquist are sophomores.

Lyons' goals lead Glenelg in win

Glenelg handed Long Reach a 6-1 loss, behind a pair of goals by Amanda Lyons. Kayla Renehan, Danielle Burris, Kathleen Mensing and Sammy Creese also tallied in the win.

Christina Kaminsky, Lyons, Sam Heisig and Ashley Wilkenson had assists for Glenelg.

"Amanda Lyons had a excellent game," said coach Dean Sheridan. "The biggest thing for us is we have six starters returning from last year's team, but also six players that are new to the program this year, and a nice mix of three good players from last year's JV. So we have lots of good players, but we are still looking for how they fit well as a group."

Kristen Fawole scored for Long Reach. Ann Bonner had the assist

Brooke Carey and Zabelle Ghazarian split time in the goal for Glenelg. Carey had three saves and Ghazarian had two.

Courtney Glasser had 12 saves for Long Reach, said Sheridan.

River Hill holds off Vikings

Sheridan Street scored in the 28th minute of the second half to give River Hill a 2-1 win over Mt. Hebron. Alex Hamer assisted on the winning goal to give the Hawks' their win.

River Hill held a 1-0 halftime lead on an unassisted goal by Michaela Hennessey.

Mt. Hebron's Amanda Steinmuller tied the game in the second half, on an assist by Kelly Richards.

Jessie Czulewicz and Nia Crump stood out on defense, and Tahlia Tavai in goal, for Mt. Hebron, said Viking coach Tim Deppen.

Raiders shut out Hammond

Atholton spread out scoring among four players for a 4-0 win over Hammond.

Desiree Bodziony, Maddie Boccio, Katrina Macadoff and Kaelin Shaw scored for the Raiders and Michele Hart and Macadoff had one assist each.

Amy Weinberg had one save for Atholton.

Freshman gets hat trick for Eagles

Though Wilde Lake tightly contested Centennial early in the game, the Eagles scored twice by halftime and went on to a 5-0 win.

Freshman Anna Mitchell had a hat trick for Centennial, scoring the first two goals of the game and adding a second-half goal. Hannah Wikner also scored in the second half. The Eagles' final goal came off a corner kick from defender Jordan Coburn and redirected into the goal by senior Nicki Mize.

"All five goals were assisted which is a reflection of how well our girls were passing the ball," said Centennial coach Steve Baxter.

Katie Donegan came up with a huge play in the net for the Eagles. She blocked a fast-break attempt, "smothering the ball at Gillian Sawyer's feet," said Baxter. "This was a big play because it kept the game in our control and didn't let Wilde Lake back in it. So far this season, Katie has been outstanding for us and made an important impact in each win."

Centennial took 20 shots at goal, and Wilde Lake had three, Baxter added.

"With the injuries we have had, we are still shuffling a few players around and tonight we were able to give everyone some time on the field," Baxter said.
