Field hockey: Shutouts abound

Rebecca Biegel isn't a starter for Marriotts Ridge - not yet anyway, but the junior wing scored what proved to be the game-winning goal against Atholton on Tuesday.

Biegel, a first-year varsity player, combined with teammate Bri Hanlon to work the ball up the left sideline on a fast break midway through the first half of the game. The ball was sent to Molly Fleming on the right side and she crossed it back to the left.

"Molly had a really great cross," Biegel said. "I was on the post and I hit it in."

It was Biegel's second goal of the season.

"She does a good job of finishing. She doesn't give up," said Marriotts Ridge coach Stacie Gado.

"We knew this would be a hard game. It's always a good game against them," said Atholton captain Nicole Lake. The Raiders were coming off a 2-1 loss to Howard and Lake said that the things they learned in that game, they applied to the Marriotts Ridge game.

"We've been working on going to the ball," she said, and it showed.

Atholton played a much stronger second half and had chances to tie the score.

"I could tell that Atholton stepped up their intensity in the second half but we held them off," Biegel said.

"We had a lot of opportunities in the circle. We just need to work on finishing," said Atholton's Kelly McQuilkin.

"We were close to scoring four or five times," Lake added.

A goal line stick save by Anne Zabel and another one by Amanda DiFerdinando prevented two possible Atholton tallies. Marriotts Ridge keeper Sophia Hamilton made six saves; Camille Bulte, her Atholton counterpart, had four.

"After the game, we talked about (how) we came out passive and we allowed them to assert what they wanted to do, and we found ourselves trying to reestablish what we wanted to do," said Atholton coach Jesse Larson. "The first impression is very important and we allowed them to dictate that."

Larson said his team was more assertive in the second half and the squad knows "it is a season and not an individual game that will define us."
