Field hockey: Mt. Hebron holds off River Hill, 3-2

A one-goal lead over River Hill wasn't safe and Mt. Hebron coach Jeannette Ireland knew it.

"We talked about it at halftime," she said. The coach reminded her squad that last weekend, in the Garrison tournament, they had a halftime lead and lost.

So when River Hill's Kat Varga tied the game 12 minutes into the second half, Mt. Hebron knew exactly what it had to to.

"We knew we had to step up and keep it going," said Tianna Wallpher, who scored Mt. Hebron's second goal.

To make it more interesting, the Vikings were a player down at the time, a situation they found themselves in twice. River Hill was also forced to play short as three yellow cards were handed out during the game.

"Playing in the tournament definitely helped us," said Mt. Hebron's Kelly Jones. "We knew not to give up, and that was a game changer. Our forwards did an amazing job and that's what made this (victory) so much better."

River Hill wasn't ready to give up either. The Hawks tied the score, 2-2, on Pauline Shih's penalty stroke with 5 minutes remaining to play.

Mt. Hebron went back on the attack. Haley Sutton redirected a pass from Jones for what proved to be the winning goal.

River Hill had one more opportunity to tie the score. It came on a penalty corner with no time left on the clock. Nina Collins inserted the ball to Shih, and the Hawks got several shots off, but Viking keeper Maddy Fisher kicked away two attempts before a River Hill player commited a foul which ended the corner, and the game.

The corner was "really nerve-wracking," Fisher said. "We knew we had to push as hard as we could because that was the last play of the a game. We just had to get the ball out of the circle."
