Boys basketball: Slow start sinks Chapelgate against Gilman

For Chapelgate, Tuesday's game against conference-rival Gilman was practically over before it started. The visiting Greyhounds won the first quarter 23-4 and led by double digits the rest of the way en route to a 66-39 victory over the Yellowjackets in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference game.

Gilman improved to 5-0 in conference play, while Chapelgate dropped to 3-3.

"We just couldn't do anything right in that first half," Chapelgate coach Frick Frierson said. "We were tentative and they shut us down on offense. Things we have been able to do in other games just weren't happening."

Gilman, which was playing without starter Cyrus Jones, got a huge boost from guard Stephen Koteen. Coming off the bench, Koteen finished with a team-high 18 points on six 3-pointers.

Three of those shots from deep came in the first six minutes as Gilman raced out to the early lead.

"He had one of these games last year and we truly feel like of the 11 guys on the team any one of them can come out and have a big night. This happened to be Stephen's night," Gilman coach Owen Daly said. "He knew he was going to get a chance and he really took advantage of it."

Gilman senior forward Ryan Ripken also chipped in during the early stages by scoring 10 of his 15 points in the first quarter. Ripken finished the game with 11 rebounds to go with his scoring production.

The second quarter was a little more even, but Gilman still managed to increase its lead to 22, 34-12, going into halftime. No player for the Yellowjackets managed more than two points in the first half.

"On the road you have to quiet the crowd early and to do that it takes discipline and concentration, which is something I thought our guys really showed tonight," Daly said.

Chapelgate's offense picked up after the break with Jordan Lawrence (9 points), Isaiah Harris-Winn (7) and Patrick Grandy (7) all getting going. The damage, however, had been done.

Gilman's lead never dipped below 21 points at any point during the final 16 minutes and was as many as 28 points in the third quarter.
