Overturned tractor-trailer on I-95 north at Route 100 causes major backup

Northbound traffic on Interstate 95 is backed up for miles prior to Route 100 following an accident in which a tractor-trailer overturned, dumping its cargo — junked vehicles — onto the highway, according to Maryland State Police. At 5 p.m., the left lane and left shoulder had reopened, according to the state highway administration. Traffic is reportedly backed up for six miles.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of I-95 and Route 100. Some of the vehicles that fell caused two other minor crashes, police said. No serious injuries were reported.

The Howard County Public School System transportation department said that schools in the Route 1 and Route 95 corridor had their afternoon bus drop offs delayed as a result.

The highway had been closed as crews cleaned up vehicles and debris scattered across all four lanes and a fuel spill from the overturned tractor-trailer, police said. Drivers are asked to avoid the area for several hours; the closure could continue through the evening rush hour.
