In your Feb. 23 article titled, "Lawmakers cool to gas tax proposal," reporter Lindsey McPherson stated, "lawmakers from both political parties agree something has to be done to restore the Transportation Trust Fund, which is used to pay for transportation improvements throughout the state." While this may be true as advertised, the reality is something else entirely.
Temporary politicians have raided the so-called trust fund to pay for other priorities not related in any way to transportation. Barring that, there would still be plenty of money in the fund and our roads would be in much better shape today.
According to a recent Washington Examiner article, Maryland's state budget spiked 11.4 percent last year, despite outcries from the governor and other politicians that they are cutting spending to the bone. This is always the game, but let's not forget they used these same arguments to raise our sales taxes and promote casino gambling in the recent past. How many times must we be played as fools?
Rather than raise our taxes again, lawmakers need to stop the plunder and be held accountable for their profligate ways.
