State is unresponsive to road cleanup requests [Letter]

I was certainly encouraged to seelast week's"At a Glance" Earth Day article, "County residents urged to pick up litter at 20-Minute Cleanup." However, a more disciplined plan is needed.

I am on the board of our community in River Hill and am constantly picking up garbage, not just litter. Unfortunately Howard County (and the state for that matter) is becoming, quite literally, a dump over the last five years. For such a progressive county, I am shocked at its lack of response to this environmental problem.

Observe the amount of garbage and litter on Routes 32, 108, 29 and 175 — and I-95 of course; not to mention Route 1. Garbage (not only plastic bags)is all over the main roads and the highway entrances. I have called the State Highway Administration over thepastthree yearsfor litter pick up assistance, but have received only minimal response.

My solution? Have County Executive Allan Kittleman call the State Highway Administration to do a sustained cleanup this summerof at least the state roads in Howard County.
