Regarding the editorial on standards for snacks and drinks, as well as Amanda Yeager's article on the bill targeting snacks,I applaud Howard County Government for trying to reduce our sugar consumption, since the federal government has its hands tied with money from the food lobby, including the Beverage Association.
Last year the World Health Organization released controversial guidelines (at least in the USA) for sugar consumption that says only 10 percent of total calories per day for adults should come from sugar. That's 12.5 teaspoons or one can of soda. The sugar lobby says 25 percent is safe, 31 teaspoons. Who do you believe?
Leading obesity researchers state that sugar is a metabolic toxin, a poison to our system. Exercise won't stop its effects, only limiting our intake will. I am not saying to stop eating it, just eat less!
The only way to change our food supply system and to get America eating right is from the ground up. If Howard County has the guts to stand up to the sugar lobby, we all need to back them. Educate yourself, people, read and learn how powerful corporate food interests, all in the name of profits, are duping us.
