Letter: Downtown fitness center a wise investment

Columbia Association is committed to serving every segment of the Columbia community, as it has for the past 40-plus years with its three award-winning fitness facilities, its indoor and outdoor pools, indoor and outdoor tennis facilities, golf courses, Columbia Ice Rink, and Columbia SportsPark/SkatePark.

CA will continue to serve the entire health and fitness community, and as part of that commitment will expand its offerings with a new club overlooking Lake Kittamaqundi in the former Rouse Company headquarters downtown.

Please allow me to clear up some misconceptions and misstatements: This will not be an 'exclusive' club; membership will be available to all adults.

Construction of the new club will be paid for largely via a loan. And the operation of the facility is projected not only to pay for itself over the life of the lease — including the debt service — but additionally to generate revenue that would then be used to subsidize many of CA's other programs,
services and expenses. The additional fee for club membership will ensure this profitability, and it will also cover the high cost of rent in what will be a revitalized, transformed downtown Columbia.

If done right — and who better to run a new fitness facility downtown than CA — this new club will not only will serve its members, but will be a wise investment through which CA will have more revenue to continue to serve its entire constituency throughout Columbia.

We are excited by all of the interest from the community, and we are excited to be partnering with the Howard Hughes Corp. to bring a CA presence to downtown Columbia and such a historic building.
