Sometimes positive things happen even though you don't expect it. Too often citizens get apathetic because they don't believe our politicians and officials will act on their behalf. I am happy to report Del. Guy Guzzone, County Executive Ken Ulman and county health officer Peter Beilenson were instrumental in seeing that the safety and welfare of citizens are their prime focus.
Yes, things can get done. I cite two recent examples.
First, for some time I've been concerned about the number of motorists not obeying the mandatory headlight signs on Route 32 between routes 108 and 144. My passenger counted more than 100 vehicles in violation in just one trip. If enforced at a $90 fine per vehicle, it would not only promote, safety but would also be a tremendous source of revenue.
My concern was discussed at the executive's annual town meeting, where it was recognized that some action was warranted. Del. Guzzone diligently worked with the State Highway Administration to impose safety awareness. Beginning on or about Saturday, Oct. 1, Route 32 signs will be expanded to read "At All Times." If this leads to preventing one accident, then it's a major accomplishment for all. Perhaps sensors could be installed to detect all violators in the future.
The second example concerns the earthquake we all experienced. I was in the Central Library when we were told to immediately evacuate. Was this the correct procedure? I suggested to Dr. Beilenson that it might be beneficial to provide documentation on earthquake safety procedures. Without any hesitation, he agreed and this information is now posted on the Howard County website on the Health Department's homepage: . In addition, there is a link to obtain an excellent earthquake-safety flier.
I thank these officials for taking the time to not only listen but to take the necessary action. One should not hesitate to make suggestions to improve Howard County, regardless of how trivial you think it might be perceived.
