Volleyball: Oakland Mills sweeps Parkville for first win

Oakland Mills earned its long awaited first win of the season Wednesday night againt visiting Parkville, 25-8, 25-19, 25-14.

Allie Cable (18 digs, five aces, two kills), Shannen McKay (five digs, four kills, block) and Heidi Larsen (nine assists, two aces) led the Scorpions to victory.

Paulina Taniewski, playing in just her second varsity match since being promoted from the JV, contributed four kills and two point blocks.

Oakland Mills was coming off of a loss to Marriotts Ridge (25-10, 25-11, 25-16) on Tuesday night.

Also on Tuesday, Long Reach (2-10) took Glenelg (10-2) to the brink, but ultimately fell in the fifth set for the fourth time this season, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 19-25, 15-11.

Glenelg was without outside hitter Morgan Perry, who was resting an injury, but got strong contributions from Aly Dillon (15 kills, five aces), middle hitter Molly Calvert (nine kills), defensive specialist Allie James (four aces) and setter Camryn Long (seven kills, three aces).

Long Reach got inspired performances from Cailin Fredrickson (18 kills on .340 hitting, 2.2 serve receive average), Alison Dorsey (nine kills, five blocks), Jessica Dubbs (12 digs) and Shelby Fredrickson (26 assists).

"It was a very exciting game, very bitter sweet for us too. We were excited to see such an improvement in our team from the first time we played them, but can't help but feel disappointment in losing our 4th 5-game match of the year," coach Jacqueline Armstead said. "We are really looking forward to playoffs."

Atholton defeated Hammond, 3-1, on Tuesday to bounce back from a loss to undefeated River Hill last Thursday.

Amanda Goodspeed (12 kills, six blocks), Natalie Alper (13 digs, eight kills), Naomi Burke (19 assists, 10 digs, four aces) and Vashti Burke (16 digs) led the Raiders.

In Hammond's second set victory, Mikhaila Abarcar had four kills and served three aces during a five-point service run to end the set. Maddie Chervenak had 12 digs for the Golden Bears in the loss.

Centennial defeated Wilde Lake on Tuesday in a match that included a wild second set. The Eagles won, 25-11, 35-33, 25-20.

Trisha Mockapetris (12 kills, three blocks) and Cici White-Torruellas (10) led the Centennial attack. Lexi White-Torruellas added 18 digs and 14 assists, and Kristen Ritchie led Centennial with 20 digs.

Kelsea Belt had 21 kills for Reservoir in a sweep of Howard on Tuesday, and setter Iulia Tath had 29 assists.

River Hill protected its undefeated record by defeating Mt. Hebron, 3-1.

On Monday, Centennial knocked off Marriotts Ridge, 25-16, 25-21, 25-13.

In that match, Trisha Mockapetris led the Eagles with 17 kills, nine digs and two blocks, while Cici White-Torruellas (5) and Kristen Ritchie (4) combined for nine more. Grace Chao served four aces, and was 11-for-12 from the service line. Lexi White-Torruellas ran the Centennial offense with 21 assists.

Intersholastic Athletic Association of Maryland

In IAAM action, Glenelg Country was knocked out of the 'C' Conference playoffs in five sets by Friends School in the IAAM quarterfinal round. Chapelgate's season ended with a 3-1 loss to Seton Keough in the 'A' Conference opening round on Oct. 21.
