Fall registration is open for all of the First Tee of Howard County classes. The PLAYer and PAR classes are filling up quickly, however, the BIRDIE and EAGLE classes still have openings. Register online at http://www.thefirstteehowardcounty.org. The schedule is on the program and instruction page.

Athelas Institute Inc., a non-profit human service organization providing housing, job and individual support to adults with intellectual disabilities will be hosting its 19th annual Charity Golf Tournament Sept. 10 at the Willow Springs Executive Golf Course in West Friendship. The tournament promises fun for all skill levels, with prize giveaways and a delicious lunch afterward at the course.

The Crusader Nation basketball program is forming a new 8th/9th grade team for boys who do not turn 15 before Sept. 1, 2013. The team will play in several area fall and winter leagues. Call 410-984-4092 for additional information.


The Baltimore Tennis Patrons Association is forming fall and winter indoor team and instructional tennis programs for Howard County boys and girls in fourth through 12th grade, post-beginner through tournament levels.

The programs include travel teams that will represent Howard County in the USA Tennis Junior Indoor Leagues, and instructional programs for less experienced players.

Travel team practices and home matches will be played at the Columbia Athletic Center and the Owen Brown Tennis Club. Instructional programs will be held at the Forty West Racquet Club. The programs are conducted on weekends October through March.

Interested youth should come ready to hit balls at the Owen Brown Tennis Club, 7150 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, on Sept. 9, 4:30-7:30 p.m. (indoor courts).

The Lightning Flash 5k and Mommy Trot will be held Sept. 8 at Long Reach High School. The race is organized by the Long Reach field hockey team and proceeds will benefit Grassroots of Howard County. The Mommy Trot, a lap around the track, starts at 9 a.m. and is free of charge. The 5k begins at 9:30. Registration will be accepted until the day of the race. The fee is $10 before Aug. 31 when it will increase to $15. There will be an after-race celebration at Eggspectations.

Registration is open for the HCYP fastpitch softball fall season for girls ages 5-17. This is an instructional program for 8-U, 10-U and 12-U players. The 18-U Columbia Red Storm will play at Ripken Myrtle Beach this November and a full regular summer travel season in 2013 (MABA or Metro). The season includes several high profile tournaments at the high school level next summer. Tryouts begin Sept. 8 at the Oakland Mills High School baseball fields. The Howard County Youth Program is holding open registration for the 2012-13 fall and spring baseball seasons. Registration is open to boys and girls ages 5-18. Registration forms and further details are available at http://www.hcyp.org.

The 11-U Elkridge Hurricanes travel team is looking for a few good players. If you are interested in trying out, contact Cary Connell at cjconnell@comcast.net. Interested players must not be 12 as of May 1, 2013. The team will play a limited fall schedule and compete in the MABA Spring League and a number of local tournaments next summer.
