Fall registration is open for all of the First Tee of Howard County classes. The PLAYer and PAR classes are filling up quickly, however, the BIRDIE and EAGLE classes still have openings. Athelas Institute Inc., a non-profit human service organization providing housing, job and individual support to adults with intellectual disabilities will be hosting its 19th annual Charity Golf Tournament Sept. 10 at the Willow Springs Executive Golf Course in West Friendship. The tournament promises fun for all skill levels, with prize giveaways and lunch afterward at the course.

The Crusader Nation basketball program is forming a new 8th/9th grade team for boys who do not turn 15 before Sept. 1, 2013. The team will play in several area fall and winter leagues. Call 410-984-4092 for additional information.

Maryland Hoopmasters Basketball is offering a fall Basketball Bootcamp and Skills Clinic. The clinic runs from Sept. 5 through Nov. 7 and features intense individual skill work and live games every Saturday. The clinic is for girls and boys grades 5 through 10. Space is limited. The Baltimore Tennis Patrons Association is forming fall and winter indoor team and instructional tennis programs for Howard County boys and girls in fourth through 12th grade, post-beginner through tournament levels.

The programs include travel teams that will represent Howard County in the USA Tennis Junior Indoor Leagues, and instructional programs for less experienced players.

Travel team practices and home matches will be played at the Columbia Athletic Center and the Owen Brown Tennis Club. Instructional programs will be held at the Forty West Racquet Club. The programs are conducted on weekends October through March.

Interested youth should come ready to hit balls at the Owen Brown Tennis Club, 7150 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, on Sept. 5, 6-8:30 p.m. (outdoor courts, weather permitting) or Sunday, Sept. 9, 4:30-7:30 p.m. (indoor courts).

The Lightning Flash 5k and Mommy Trot will be held Sept. 8 at Long Reach High School. The race is organized by the Long Reach field hockey team and proceeds will benefit Grassroots of Howard County. The Mommy Trot, a lap around the track, starts at 9 a.m. and is free of charge. The 5k begins at 9:30. Registration will be accepted until the day of the race. The fee is $10 before Aug. 31 when it will increase to $15. There will be an after-race celebration at Eggspectation.

The ninth annual Knights of Columbus 10k Run will be held Sept. 1 at 8 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City. The annual charity race is organized by the Knights of Columbus St. Louis the King Council of St. Louis Parish. The event helps support local charities, including the Arc of Howard County and FISH of Howard County.

This is a family event with lots of activities planned including music, food, random prizes, post race massages and a moon bounce for the kids. Cash awards ($150, $75 and $50 for the top three male and female finishers) and non-cash awards in seven age-group categories. The race course is USATF certified.

Team registration is being accepted for the Central Maryland Soccer League's annual Columbus Classic, which is held Oct. 6-7 in the Westminster area of Carroll County. The Classic is open to all USSF-affiliated school, recreation and club teams in the mid-Atlantic region and is sanctioned by SAY and US Club Soccer. Competition is available for both boys and girls teams in the single age groupings of U-8 through U14 and the dual ages of U-16 and U-18. The tournament format is round-robin.

The Thunder Soccer Club Spurs (U-10 boys, born after Aug. 1, 2002), coached by Kevin Cowley, will hold supplemental tryouts in August. The Spurs will play in the CMSSL and in several tournaments. Interested players should email kevin@spi-syst.com.

Ice hockey

The Long Reach ice hockey team is seeking players who plan to attend Long Reach High School in the fall and want to play ice hockey. No experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and have fun. The team will help with equipment. E-mail normasesto@comcast.net if interested.

Registration is open for the HCYP fastpitch softball fall season for girls ages 5-17. This is an instructional program for 8-U, 10-U and 12-U players. The 18-U Columbia Red Storm will play at Ripken Myrtle Beach this November and a full regular summer travel season in 2013 (MABA or Metro). The season includes several high profile tournaments at the high school level next summer. Tryouts begin Sept. 8 at the Oakland Mills High School baseball fields. The HCYP Raiders travel program is sponsoring teams from 8-U to 19-U for the 2013 season. The Raiders plan to have a total of 20 teams in 12 age groups, including two 12-U Cooperstown teams, an 18-U college prep team in the Eddie Brooks League and two American League team affiliations.

The Howard County Youth Program is holding open registration for the 2012-13 fall and spring baseball seasons. Registration is open to boys and girls ages 5-18. Registration forms and further details are available at http://www.hcyp.org.

The 11-U Elkridge Hurricanes travel team is looking for a few good players. If you are interested in trying out, contact Cary Connell at cjconnell@comcast.net. Interested players must not be 12 as of May 1, 2013. The team will play a limited fall schedule and compete in the MABA Spring League and a number of local tournaments next summer.


The Baltimore Hawks will hold tryouts for their 2014 and 2015 summer club teams Sept. 23 from 8-10 a.m. at Mustang Stadium on the Owings Mills campus of Stevenson University. The $40 tryout fee is non-refundable. For more information, call Tim Puls, 443-352-4298.

The Maryland Roughriders club team will hold tryouts for the summer 2013 teams Sept. 9 and 16 from noon-6 p.m. at CCBC-Catonsville. The Roughriders will field six teams: U-13, U-15, U-16 (two teams), U-18 Select and U-18 Elite. The tryout times are:
