The Columbia Red Storm will hold tryouts on Sept. 7 at Oakland Mills High School to recruit current high school age players, 19 and under, for the upcoming 2014 summer season. The Christian Athletic Association is starting a new 12U travel baseball team for 2014. The CAA Knights will be holding tryouts on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. at their home field, located at 2100 Westchester Ave. in Catonsville. The Knights are looking for experienced players who would like to compete at a high level, improve their skills and develop attributes like leadership, commitment, motivation and sportsmanship. In a little less than two weeks, riders will take to the Columbia "Booty Loop" for the Fifth Annual 24 Hours of Booty at the Columbia Gateway Business Park. The family-friendly cancer charity cycling event, beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24 and running until 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, is accepting online registration through Aug. 24 and in-person registration at the event. Team registration is currently being accepted for the Central Maryland Soccer Association's 17th Annual Columbus Soccer Classic. The event is scheduled to take place the weekend of Oct. 12 and 13 at venues in and around Bel Air. The Classic is open to all USSF-affiliated school, recreation and club teams in the Mid-Atlantic region. Competition is available for both boys and girls teams in the single age groupings of U8 through U14 and the dual ages of 16U and 18U. The tournament features round-robin competition, with all teams guaranteed a minimum of three games and the possibility of playoffs. The SAC United Premier White U13 Girls team ('00-'01) is holding supplemental tryouts on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Glenelg Country School and Thursday, Aug. 22 from 5-6:30 p.m. at Covenant Park field #6. Email to RSVP. The team is looking to add one or two field players and a goalkeeper to its roster.


The 10th Annual Ellicott City Labor Day Running Classic 10K and 5K trail run is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31 at 8 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Anthony in Ellicott City. The race is presented by the Knights of Columbus St. Louis the King Council in Clarksville and helps support local charities, including the Arc of Howard County and FISH of Howard County. The Columbia Association's Wilde Lake Tennis Center will host the Championships at Columbia from Sept. 12-15 (Men and Womens Singles and Mixed Doubles) and Sept. 19-22 (Men and Womens Doubles). The tournament is open to players 18 and older with NTRP or Club ratings between 3.0 and 4.5+.
