The Cindy LaRue League, an informal co-rec softball league, is looking for players age 19 and older — especially couples and women — from all parts of Howard County. This is slow-pitch, non-competitive softball played on Sunday afternoons at Wilde Lake Middle School from late April to August. Athletic skill not required. Everyone plays. The Glenmont Tennis League is a summer recreational tennis league for adult women. Meet new players and just have fun. Applications are due by April 1. For an application, email or call 410-730-6565.


The Ellicott City Patriots Youth Football and Cheer (and brand new Poms) organization is registering online for the fall season. Players ages 5-14 will be placed on teams based on age, weight and experience. Go to for registration and more information.

Booster camps

The River Hill Boosters are sponsoring summer sports camps at River Hill High School. The camps are designed to help young athletes improve their fundamental athletic skills. Weekly camps begin June 18 and run 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. Over 20 different camps are offered including football, dance and an Allied Sports camp. Thunder Soccer Club's Spurs (U-9 boys born between Aug. 1, 2002 and July 31, 2003) are holding supplemental tryouts Mondays 5-6 p.m. at the Howard County Sports Center, 6742 Dorsey Road, Elkridge and Fridays 6-7 p.m. at Philips School, 8920 Whiskey Bottom Road, Laurel. Email or call 410-227-0188.

Team registration is being accepted for the U.S. Club Soccer's 2012 Maryland Cup, which will take place April 28-29 in Carroll County.

The Maryland Cup features boys and girls competition in U-10 to U-19 single age groupings in recreational travel and premier travel levels. The premier level winners receive a free berth to the U.S. Club regional competition.

The PAWF Greco-Roman/Freestyle qualifier will be held April 14 at Big Spring High School in Newville, PA. The meet is open to out-of-state wrestlers. A 2012 USA wrestling card is required and is available for purchase at the event. Go to

Field hockey

Freedom HKY (formerly Spitfire Field Hockey), a competitive, year-round field hockey club run by former national team players, will hold tryouts for its 2012 spring outdoor teams on March 22 at the University of Maryland College Park and March 25 and April 1 at Western Regional Park.

Freedom fields boys and girls teams for U-10 through U-14 and women's teams for U-16 and U-19.

Select teams practice up to twice a week and will play in spring and summer competitive tournaments.

Team registration is underway for the Lax Max Lacrosse Tournament which will be held June 8-10 in Westminster. The event is open to all school, recreation and club affiliated teams.
