Running

Football

The Maryland Youth Football Full-Contact Camp will be held at Good Counsel High School June 18-22 (Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.). The camp is for players ages 7-14. Cost: $350 (15 percent discount for organizations that bring five or more participants). Participants will receive camp evaluations and fee only camp highlight tape among other things. Cheerleading

The Chapelgate Christian Academy Cheerleading Clinic will be held March 3 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Chapelgate Christian Academy, 2600 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville. The clinic is open to girls in grades 1-8. Participants will be grouped by grade. Cost: $35 (includes T-shirt and pizza lunch). Space is limited; register early. Golf

The Glen Mar Golf Classic, set for May 7, at the Timbers of Troy Golf Course in Elkridge is hosted by Glen Mar United Methodist Church and will benefit Grassroots, Howard County's 24-hour crisis intervention center which shelters individuals and families who are homeless.

The tournament includes a continental breakfast, silent auction and luncheon. In addition to trophies for the three foursomes having the lowest scores, prizes will be awarded for longest drive and closest to the pin. There will also be a putting contest, an opportunity to "Use the Pro" on a par 5, and "Hit the Circle" on a par 3.

The format is captain's choice. Registration and breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8:30. Entry fee: $125 (per player); $500 (foursome). Non-golfers may attend at $25 per person to join the luncheon and participate in the silent auction.

Sponsorships are available from $2,500 (Corporate level) to $250 (signage on one of the 18 holes). All proceeds from tournament sponsorships, fees, and the silent auction will support operations at Grassroots.

The 22nd annual Howard County General Hospital Benefit Golf Classic will be held May 21 at Turf Valley Resort. Registration and a putting contest begin at 10:30 a.m. Call 410-740-7840.

The George E. Sonnefeld Foundation will award at least one $2,500 scholarship to an area high school senior golfer. Applications are available at school guidance offices or by calling 410-841-5670.

Softball

The county's recreation department is accepting team registration until March 23 for its adult and 50+ adult softball leagues.

The adult leagues start the week of April 15 and include Men's D, Women's (Tuesday), Co-Rec D and REC divisions. Registration fees are $880 for a 20-game season or $475 for Monday night Co-Rec leagues (a 10-game season).

The 50+adult league is held Mondays, beginning April 16. Fee: $880 (20-game season).

HCYP girls fastpitch softball registration is underway. HCYP's recreational softball program welcomes all girls, ages 6-17, from beginners to experienced players. Practices begin in March, and games will be played from early April to early June. Register online at http://www.hcyp.org or print out a registration form to mail in with a check.

Lacrosse

The Baltimore Hawks will hold tryouts for their summer lacrosse club team Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon, at Mustang Stadium on the Owings Mills Campus of Stevenson University. The Hawks will hold tryouts for players graduating in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Tryout fee: $40 (non-refundable).

Registration is underway for the Lions Pride Howard Boys Lacrosse Clinic scheduled for 11 a.m.-1 p.m., March 10 at Howard High School. Sign-in will begin at 10:30 near the tennis courts. All participants need a helmet, gloves, elbow pads, shoulder pads, mouth piece, cleats, stick and reversible jersey. The clinic is open to boys currently in grades 6-8 and is free to Howard County residents.

Baseball

Baseball/Softball

Registration has started for the Laurel Little League's spring season. Baseball and softball divisions are available for ages 4-18. Walk-in registration will be held this weekend at Modell's in Laurel Lakes. Registration is available from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, and 1-4 p.m., Sunday. Online registration is offered at laurellittleleague.com. Cost: $80 (tee ball), $100 (Minor and Major League softball and baseball), $125 (baseball and softball players ages 13-18). There is a discount for siblings and raffle tickets are available to help defray registration costs.

Soccer

Team registration is underway for the 2012 Maryland Cup scheduled to take place April 28-29 in Carroll County. The Maryland Cup features boys and girls competition in the U-10 to U-19 single age groupings in the recreation, travel and premier travel levels. Winners of the premier travel level will receive a free berth to the U.S. Club regional competition; the recreation travel level will not advance to regionals.

The Baltimore JCC Maccabi Club will be hosting soccer tryouts for players interested in participating in the 2012 JCC Maccabi Games taking place Aug. 5-9.

Boys and girls teams are being formed for participation in either Houston, Texas, or Memphis, Tenn. games. Players who are 13 years old by Aug. 1, 2012 and have not turned 17 by that date are eligible to participate. Teams are being formed for boys 14-U, boys 16-U and girls 16-U.

Tryouts will take place March 4, 11 and 18 at 1 p.m. at the Owings Mills JCC athletic fields, 3506 Gwynnbrook Ave., Baltimore. All players accompanied by one parent must report to the main lobby on the first scheduled tryout date for a 30-minute information meeting. Players should come dressed for outdoor activities on all dates.
