Soccer Association of Columbia


The Soccer Association of Columbia Girls U-13 team won the 2013 August Cup tournament, Aug. 25-26, with a 3-0 record on the strength of a 13-2 total goal differential.

Camryn Anderson, Brittney Bennett, Katie Cardea, Kiersten Moore, Sammi Salter, Bethany Stewart and Tessa Walsh all contributed goals to pace an undefeated weekend. A stout midfield of Hannah Bergquist, Kelli Dunagan, Leah Simmons and Carly Wetzel controlled the pace of play to set up multiple scoring chances.


The defense, led by goalkeeper Sarah Hauk and supported by Hannah Glaros, Emily Hauk, Julia Schmidt and Krista Whelan, led the way to two shutouts in three games played.

The girls are preparing for the Olney Labor Day tournament, and are set to start their fall season after the Labor Day weekend as a WAGS Division 1 team.


WWBA National Championship

Oakland Mills' Kyle Madden-Stricker and Joe Zaytaz made the All-Tournament team at the 2012 WWBA 16-U National Championship, held July 13-20 in Marietta, Ga. The players were selected based on first-hand observations as well as statistical data from among 240 teams that participated.

Madden-Stricker made the pitching team with nine strikeouts and a .00 ERA in seven innings. He also made the hitting team with a batting average of .462, an on-base percentage of .588 and a slugging percentage of .538.

Zaytaz made the pitching team with seven strikeouts and a .00 ERA in 6.6 innings.

With more than 3,600 players from all around the United States in attendance, making the top 400 hitters and top 300 pitchers is quite an accomplishment.
