Letter to the sports editor: Seven more Atholton football players headed to college

Football scholarships say a lot about Atholton coaches

I want to congratulate the Raider football players and coaching staff on placing seven current seniors (with three still likely to sign) and 12 past players into college football programs since Kyle Schmitt's arrival three years ago.

Coach Schmitt and his staff (John England, Justin Carey, Ed Tyler, Haroon Rasheed and Jared Albert) have made Atholton the most successful public school in the county, and possibly the state, in placing players into college football programs and helping these kids secure their futures.

Given the bad news surrounding certain athletic programs around the country lately, I felt it important to highlight the positive impact a coaching staff can have in the life of young men.

The current seniors include Steve Whiting (Bowie State), Austin Tennessee (Concord), Kenny Thomas (University of Pennsylvania), Brian McMahon (Maryland), Ean Katz (Maryland), Paul Federinko (Lafayette) and Ian Waddell (Wagner).

Alumni current playing include Matt Robinson (Maryland), Kalvin Seamonson (Salisbury), Ryan Raines (Salisbury), Brian Anthony (Maine), Curtis Pumphrey (Bowie State), Andrew King (Morgan State), Eddie Robinson (Morgan State), Kyle and Colin Gordon (Frostburg State), Rich Lafleur (Lackawanna Junior College), Brandon Dawson (Stevenson) and Anthony Ernest (Shenandoah).

Congratulations to all; I am proud to be a Raider.
