Indoor track: County teams steal show at 2A South regional

After being somewhat overshadowed at the county championships two weeks ago, three county squads seized the opportunity to take center stage at the Class 2A South Regional championships.

Oakland Mills, Glenelg and Long Reach, which had combined for just one top three finish between the boys and girls in the team competition at counties, swept the podium spots at the 5th Regiment Armory in Baltimore on Monday.

Glenelg won the girls competition with 94 points, followed by Oakland Mills (86) and Long Reach (73). Then in the boys competition, Oakland Mills took first with 69 points, just ahead of Glenelg (66), Long Reach (65) and Carver Vo-Tech (65).

Marriotts Ridge turned in a pair of respectable showings as well, with the boys taking fifth (47 points) and the girls sixth (32).

In the girls portion, the Gladiators were spearheaded by winning efforts from Brielle Pitney (500), Sammy Creese (pole vault) and their 4x400 relay squad. The real key to Glenelg's success, however, was in having at least one top six finisher in all 13 events.

Some of the other notable Gladiator individual performers were Leah Allen, who was second in the 55- and 300-meter dashes, and Caragh MacDermott, who was fourth in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600.

The Oakland Mills girls got a trio of individual victories from Tiffany Lang, who won the 800 (2:31.29), 1,600 (5:34.65) and 3,200 (12:01.30) to single-handedly account for 30 of the team's points.

The Scorpions also got a boost from their 4x800 relay squad, which won in a time of 11:02.87.

Long Reach's girls brought home titles in the 4x200 relay and 300. Kristen Fawole, who also finished third in the 55-dash, was responsible for the victory in the 300. Michelle Vanagas also had a strong meet, finishing second in the 800 and 1,600 to go with a fourth in the 500.

Sam Andrews ended up being the pace-setter for Oakland Mills in its title run on the boys side. He won individual titles in the 1,600 (5:06.01) and 3,200 (9:48.56), while also serving as part of the winning 4x800 relay squad.

Cameron Bowling (second in the 800), Tom Brumbaugh (third in the 1,600 and 3,200) and Tenard Childs (third in 55 hurdles) were other notable performers for the Scorpions.

Glenelg got a boost from the field events. Jeremy Starr (5-6) and Nathan Tatum (5-4) finished first and second, respectively, in the high jump and Mike Messina won the pole vault (10-0). Blake Richardson also chipped in with a pair of third-place efforts in the 300 and 500.

Long Reach got its heavy lifting from Dominic Robinson (shot put) and Purcell Freeman (55 hurdles), who accounted for the two individual titles won by the Lightning. Anton Fuente finishing second in the pole vault and the team finishing in the top four in all three relays also helped matters.

Connor Foley led Marriotts Ridge's effort with runner-up finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200.

All the teams will now turn their focus to the 2A state meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 20 at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
