Men's basketball: HCC earns berth in regionals

Needing a win to qualify for the National Junior College Athletic Association regional tournament, Howard Community College delivered Saturday. James Peters scored 21 points, including 17 in the first half thanks in part to five 3-pointers, to lead the Dragons to a 72-53 victory over Montgomery College Takoma Park.

The win improved HCC to 12-12 on the season and earned it a regional berth March 2-4 at Hagerstown Community College.

In addition to Peters, the Dragons got a huge lift from Sean Sullivan (Reservoir). Coming off the bench, the sophomore recorded his first double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds to go along with five assists.

In the early going, Peters carried the HCC offense on its way to a 38-31 lead at the half. Then, sparked by their defense, the Dragons broke things wide open in the second.

HCC built a lead as many as 21 points on its way to the 19-point victory. Leo Rogers (Hammond) scored 11 points and added eight rebounds on the evening for HCC and did most of his damage in the second half.

Other key contributors in the winning effort were Ben Vester (Wilde Lake) and Aaron Bellamy (Howard). Vester scored 12 points and Bellamy had six.

On the season, Vester ranks first in the Maryland JUCO conference in field goal percentage (74 percent).

HCC will be back in action on Thursday in the first round of the Maryland JUCO Tournament at Prince George's Community College. The team's opponent is TBD.
