The momentum swung like a pendulum Friday night. First Glenelg led, then Mt. Hebron led. Back and forth it went, until Sam Brookhart put a stop to it.
The Mt. Hebron senior scored with four seconds left in the second overtime period to put her team in front, 12-11.
"Honestly, we had set up a play for me, and I just pretty much ripped it. I turned around and ripped it," Brookhart said.
"It was a really good shot on her part," said Glenelg goalie Megan Taylor.
Although there was one more draw, there wasn't enough time for Glenelg to do anything.
"I feel like we won and lost this game 10 times over the 50 minutes," said Mt. Hebron coach Trish Derwart Sullivan. "We struggled to value our possessions, especially early on, but we're young and figuring things out."
The game was tied, 10-all, after regulation and both teams scored in the first three-minute overtime period.
Each side had the ball in the second three-minute overtime and with the clock winding down, the ball was in Glenelg's offensive end. The Gladiators were looking for the right shot, when Mt. Hebron got possession on a crucial, and controversial, play with 35 seconds remaining.
"Danielle (Baker) got hit in the face and we lost the ball after that," said Glenelg's Meaghan Guthrie.
Mt. Hebron's Jessie Czulewicz came up with the loose ball and got it to midfield before the officials, realized that Baker was hurt play and stopped the clock. Baker was helped off the field.
"That was a no call. (The officials) told me that she fell into (Mt. Hebron's sticks)" said a furious Ginger Kincaid. Mt. Hebron was double teaming defensively and the Glenelg coach maintained that Viking players had simultaneously checked Baker on both sides of her head and a foul should have been called.
Suspecting Baker received a concussion, Kincaid said, "We'll be lucky to get Danielle back by the end of the season."
Glenelg took a 3-0 lead in the first half and stretched it out to a 5-1 advantage before Mt. Hebron came charging back, but running quick passing plays.
"I think we were trying too hard," Derwart Sullivan said. "We just needed to settle down and calm ourselves offensively."
Mt. Hebron drew to within a goal (6-5) at the half, but Glenelg again extended its lead the three when Baker and Maribeth Blonchek scored.
With Jamie Schwartz dishing out some of her game-high six assists, Mt. Hebron scored five unanswered goals to take a 10-8 lead.
Blonchek and Stephanie Asher tied the game for Glenelg, sending it into overtime where Brookhart, who had shot poorly during regulation play, became the hero.
"I told her to rip the rope, and she did," Derwart Sullivan said. After the game, Brookhart's teammates found a hole in the back of the net
"This was a great win for this team," Derwart Sullivan added.
The loss was Glenelg's second in county play. Mt. Hebron is still unbeaten and faces Marriotts Ridge, also undefeated, on Tuesday at Marriotts Ridge.
