Four teams — Glenelg, River Hill, Howard and Reservoir — kept their playoff hopes alive with victories in Monday's regional quarterfinal games.
Class 2A South
Marriotts Ridge hung with top-seeded Glenelg for three quarters, then the Mustangs ran out of gas.
Marriotts Ridge trailed Glenelg, 34-33, after three periods, but did not score in the final stanza as Glenelg went on to win, 51-33.
"To lock someone down in the fourth quarter and also be effective offensively is quite a combination," said Glenelg coach Don Beall.
Glenelg outscored Marriotts Ridge, 17-0, in the final period.
Beall said he didn't think is team played good defense in the first half, but made some nice adjustments at halftime.
Foul trouble hurt Marriotts Ridge. Starter Molly Fleming fouled out and Zoe Stukenberg, who played Glenelg's Emily Russo in a box and one defense, picked up her fourth foul in the third quarter and had to sit.
"Two girls in a row missed foul shots, we didn't take care of the ball and we missed easy layups. I think we just ran out of steam. We gave it all that we had those first three quarters," said Marriotts Ridge coach Kristen Reier.
"Really proud that we got to this game. The sting doesn't feel as bad to lose to the two-time District V champions," Reier added.
The Mustangs were led by Nicole Grote's 12 points.
Glenelg will host Largo on Wednesday.

"We lost a heartbreaker," said Mt. Hebron coach Tony Bell. He also called the game at Annapolis the "craziest game I've ever been involved in.
"We had them, then we got caught in a couple of questionable calls."
The game was physical and Bell said some double fouls were called but the most perplexing call came late in the fourth quarter with score very close.
"We were tied or down by one or two," he said.
Megan Doherty substituted into the game, but there was confusion as to who should be coming out. In the meantime, the official handed the ball to Kelly Jones to inbound, realized there were six players on the court and called a technical against Mt. Hebron.
Annapolis hit the free throws and Mt. Hebron was down by four with 39 seconds to go.
Doherty went coast-to-coast to tie the score with 18 seconds left. Mt. Hebron called a timeout, but Vikings fouled on the ensuing play and Annapolis ended up winning by four points.
"Their big girl (Latifah Butler) got five consecutive rebounds and put backs," Bell said. "She was a big part of the play in the fourth quarter."
Butler finished with a game-high 21 points.
Jones led Mt. Hebron with 17 points. The Vikings ended their season 14-10 overall.
"We played with heart and we never quit," Bell said. "We had some big wins this season.
