Girls basketball: Glenelg, River Hill, Reservoir, Long Reach, Howard, Oakland Mills win

Mt. Hebron worked hard to overcome a 16-9 deficit and forge an 18-18 tie with Glenelg at the half. Then the Vikings seemed to forget that there were 16 more minutes to play. Mt. Hebron tallied five points in the third quarter and nothing in the fourth while being outscored, 44-5, as Glenelg won, 62-23.

"The first half we had some decent shots, but we didn't finish," said Glenelg coach Don Beall.

"We weren't help-side (defense) very well and they took advantage of that," Glenelg's Emily Russo said. "We made that (help-side) a key point in the second half … and we got on a roll. Our defense definitely picked up."

Mt. Hebron's effort left coach Tony Bell speechless. "I have no answers. Glenelg is a good team. Fortunately, we'll get to see them again."

Reservoir 55, Centennial 21

"Swish" was noticeably absent as Reservoir defeated Centennial. The sound of the ball dropping cleanly through the net was replaced by the dull clank the ball makes when it hits the rim and falls harmlessly away. Centennial was 8 for 23 from the free throw line; Reservoir was 15 for 34. Combined there were 47 fouls called in the game, but that doesn't appear in a box score or the win-loss column.

"Reservoir played better than we did," said Centennial coach Bobby Macheel. His young team had eight points at the half and 12 entering the fourth quarter.
